Stranger Things co-creator Ross Duffer has revealed that Eleven was meant to die in the first season.

Talking at a recent Q&A at Chapman University, Ross explained how when they were first pitching the Netflix hit, it was seen as a limited series that would basically end how the first season did, only with more sacrifice.

"Maybe I shouldn't say this because I like to pretend that it was all planned out, but it was originally pitched as a limited series. So it was like, Eleven was gonna sacrifice herself and save the world and then that was gonna be it," he outlined (via CinemaBlend).

Of course, that still happened but as we all know, Eleven's (Millie Bobby Brown) sacrifice was short-lived since she was back from the Upside Down in season two to help defeat the new Big Bad.

Ross added that when they went to Netflix with the series, they had already started to sketch out season two before even doing the first one.

"They were like, 'Well, we like this but how could it keep going?' And you're just sort of riffing in the moment and we were like, 'Well Will's back from this other dimension and he's not doing well,' and they were like, 'Great!'," he recalled.

The rest, as they say, is history with the Duffer brothers already at work on a third season of the show.

They've already revealed that season two fan favourite Erica will be back in the next season and she will have a much bigger role. "'We got to use more Erica' – that was one of the first things we said in the writers' room," Ross explained.

Stranger Things season two is now available to watch on Netflix.
