Tesla is going back to its origins. At a semi-reveal event Thursday night, Elon Musk introduced the world to the all-new Roadster, the model that put Tesla on the map (and into people's garages), but that has been out of commission since 2011 as the company sidetracked into the Model S, X, and 3. And this Roadster has seriously impressive specs:

  • 0 to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds
  • 0 to 100 mph in 4.4 seconds
  • Top speed of over 250 mph
  • 3 motors and all-wheel drive
  • 620 miles per charge

Which is all to say Tesla has a new supercar that scratches at new speed records for production cars—including breaking the two-second 0 to 60 barrier and coming tantalisingly close to the fastest production car speed ever recorded (277.87 mph by the Koenigsegg Agera RS). It will be the quickest production car in the world, if Musk is to be believed. Best of all, all that power is brought to you by electric technology.

"The point of doing this is to give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars," Musk told the crowd, the Verge reports. "Driving a gasoline sports car is going to feel like a steam engine with a side of quiche."

The Roadster, which seats four, won't be available until 2020. However, if you've got the spare change, you're already able to reserve one through Tesla—it costs approximately £190,000, including a £38,000 deposit. If it delivers on all its adrenaline-pumping promises, you can bet it will be worth the wait.
