Harrison Ford has saved a galaxy far, far away more than once, but it turns out that he's also a hero in real life as well.

The Star Wars and Indiana Jones actor and a friend came to the aid of a woman trapped in a roadside crash in California on Sunday, according to Ventura County Star.

Avid pilot Ford and his companion had apparently been at nearby Santa Paula Airport prior to spotting a car go sliding off the motorway. Law enforcement say that Ford joined with others to rescue a woman from the car.

"He acted as a good Samaritan, just like everybody else, and tried to help before emergency services arrived," Officer Matt Alonzo of the Santa Paula Police Department told the newspaper.

Luckily, the rescued woman only had minor injuries and was taken for treatment when authorities arrived on the scene. The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the cause of the crash.

Ford has had some memorable close calls himself. He was widely credited with saving lives for steering his private plane towards a golf course (rather a busy city centre) when it crashed back in March 2015.

The 75-year-old actor suffered injuries of his own in the crash, and later reflected on averting almost certain disaster in an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

"I remember the engine stopping, I remember that part very well. And then I remember the tower, I remember their suggestion," he recalled.

"Their suggestion was that I take the normal route to land and I knew I wasn't going to do that, so I said no. And that's the last thing that I remember until five days afterwards actually."

That incident came only a few months after Ford underwent emergency surgery after being injured on the set of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
