Prince Harry is to marry his American actress girlfriend, the Suits actress Meghan Markle.

The official announcement from Clarence House read: "His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms Meghan Markle.

"The wedding will take place in spring 2018. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.

"His Royal Highness and Ms Markle became engaged in London earlier this month. Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty The Queen and other close members of his family.

"Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms Markle's parents.

"The couple will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace."

Kensington Palace announced the news on Twitter today (November 27) adding: "Prince Harry and Ms Markle became engaged in London earlier this month.

"The Prince of Wales has announced the engagement of Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle."

In a statement also issued by Kensington Palace, Meghan's parents said: "We are incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry. Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person.

"To see her union with Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy for us as parents.

"We wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited for their future together."

Harry's brother Prince William and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge also sent their best wishes, saying: "We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together."

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, Harry's grandparents, added they they are "delighted for the couple and wish them every happiness".

After much speculation, Harry and Meghan made their first appearance in public as a couple this September.

The Queen has given her blessing to the union, with Prince Harry at fifth-in-line to the throne obliged to ask her permission under the Succession to the Crown Act 2013.

And she and her husband the Duke of Edinburgh also gave their blessing via Twitter.

Meghan has been wed once before, marrying film producer Trevor Engelson in Jamaica in 2011, but splitting after just two years.

Harry and Meghan are due to appear for a photo call at Kensington Palace later on Monday, according to a post on the Palace's Twitter account.

The couple will also give a filmed interview that will be aired on Monday evening.
