Cancel your bank holiday bender plans as it looks like we won't be treated to a day off to celebrate Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding next spring.

As soon as their engagement was announced this week, social media was flooded with users eagerly speculating over whether the wedding date would be made a bank holiday - as with William and Kate's royal wedding in 2011.

As we all agree, extra time off work is a huge priority.

It was initially believed that the decision rested on whether or not Harry and Meghan decided to have a public or private ceremony (which we still don't know); if they opted public, we might get a day off to watch, but if they went for private, the world would respect their decision to keep the day to themselves.

Sadly it seems that Downing Street has voted against a public holiday, with reports emerging towards the end of the day yesterday claiming that there were "no plans" for a national day off.

Hopefully the decision isn't a reflection on the fact that the couple have opted to keep their ceremony private. It could well just be because William is heir to the throne - behind Prince Charles - while his younger brother Harry is only fifth in line. It's unlikely that Harry would ever become King, while it's almost certain that William will - and a future king's wedding is more worthy of a bank holiday.

The actual date of the wedding has yet to be announced, so it's likely that we won't get full confirmation on the public holiday (or lack thereof) until then. When William and Kate announced their engagement back in 2010, their wedding date was confirmed one week later. So watch this space...

Just don't order £130 of bunting quite yet.
