A video that has been going viral on social media shows divers encountering a great white shark that's nearly the size of Jaws of Spielberg movie fame.
The terrifying predator, likely the largest great white ever photographed, was first filmed near Mexico's Guadalupe Island in 2013 for a Discovery Channel show. The latest footage was posted on videographer Mauricio Hoyos Padilla's Facebook page, where it has collected almost 8 million views.
It shows the 20-foot-long fish, a female dubbed "Deep Blue," passing a large cage several times where Hoyos Padilla and other divers wisely took refuge. One diver is within arm's length of the beast as she swims by. At the time of the video, Deep Blue was pregnant, despite being at least 50 years old.
Deep Blue has a gaping hole on her right trunk, and her dorsal fin and tail appear to be scraped and damaged, possibly from fighting or mating. She was likely feeding at an elephant seal colony not far from where she was filmed.
