Game of the Week | Far Cry 3

Game of the Week | Far Cry 3

What does a good first-person shooter need these days (apart from serious gunplay and gratuitous violence)? Trip-out drugs, obviously.

Ubisoft has recognised this all-important addition to the run-and-gun arsenal in Far Cry 3.

In the newest instalment of island-based mayhem, players can still enjoy the you-against-an-army-of-mercenaries scenario, the sandbox go-anywhere environment that allows you to plan individual assaults, and a giant cache of weaponry including knives, dart rifles, Uzis, Molotov cocktails, sniper rifles - but what caught our attention was the encouraged indulgence in hard drugs to complete missions.

The accommodating Doctor Earnhardt is the mad scientist who’ll be fixing you up with pick-me-up pills and potions prepared in his chemical greenhouse - but you may have to hunt for your own magic mushrooms (so it’s just like being back at uni in that respect, then).

The goodies on offer range from super stimulants to other concoctions that appear to do much more, though you’ll have to wait to play to find out what. Thermal imaging? Invisibility?

That remains to be seen. Or not seen, as the case may be.

Far Cry 3 is out 7 September on PS3, Xbox and PC
