Back in January, when the world was a simpler place, George R.R. Martin posted on his (not a) blog that he wouldn't be able to meet the deadlines for the sixth book in the Song of Ice and Fire series of Game of Thrones.

It looks increasingly unlikely that the book will be released before the TV series on HBO next summer so the books and episodes may continue to take different paths and show events in different orders. One thing we can be sure of is that his new book The Winds of Winter is going to be just as bleak as its predecessors. Whilst at the Guadalajara International Book Fair Martin told readers not to hold their breath for happy reunions, marital bliss or rainbows.

"There are a lot of dark chapters right now in the book that I'm writing," he said. "It is called The Winds of Winter, and I've been telling you for 20 years that winter was coming. Winter is the time when things die, and cold and ice and darkness fill the world, so this is not going to be the happy feel-good that people may be hoping for. Some of the characters are in very dark places.

"In any story, the classic structure is, 'Things get worse before they get better,' so things are getting worse for a lot of people.I'm not going to tell you how I'm going to end my book, but I suspect the overall flavor is going to be as much bittersweet as it is happy."

He also revealed that he wished he hadn't been quite so ambitious with all the world building in his series, "Sometimes I look back and say, 'Did it really have to be Seven Kingdoms?'" he said. "The Five Kingdoms of Westeros, that would have been good, right?"

The Dream of Spring which is the seventh and final book of the series may also be released in tandem with the The Winds of Winter as Martin is also currently working on this.

Considering his apocalyptic blog post following the results of the election, lets hope George took some time away from the keyboard before slaying too many characters in revenge.
