Must list | Seven Psychopaths

Must list | Seven Psychopaths

Art imitates life, but with a higher body count, in this week’s big film release.

In Seven Psychopaths, struggling Hollywood scriptwriter Marty (Colin Farrell) has a title (er, Seven Psychopaths), he just hasn’t got a script.

Meanwhile, real-life Seven Psychopaths writer/director (keep up), London-born Irish playwright Martin McDonagh, not only has a great script, he’s also got an amazing cast — Farrell, Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson and Tom Waits — whom between them should know a thing or two about playing a psychopath.

The result is a smart, explosive and very funny film; a sort of insider’s take on the movie-making process, only with more violence and dog-theft. It’s well worth 110 minutes of your time, and joins a long line of films about seven of something (none of which, weirdly, are from the Seventies)…

Seven other films with the word “seven” in the title

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

Seven Samurai (1954)

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)

The Seven Year Itch (1955)

The Seventh Seal (1957)

The Magnificent Seven (1960)

Seven (1995)

Seven Psychopaths is released on December 5th.
