It’s not remotely controversial to call Withnail and I the funniest British film of all-time. Each character is perfectly drawn and played, it’s more quotable than Oscar Wilde and it somehow gets better with every repeat watch.
So it’s worth flagging up that Proud: Camden are putting on Withnail & Me: The Finale, a collection of on-set stills and unseen prints taken by renowned film photographer Murray Close.
Invited by director Bruce Robinson to photograph the cast during location filming in 1986, Close was there to capture the film’s most memorable sequence as the two resting actors played by Richard E Grant and Paul McGann) escape Camden for the country, only to find Uncle Monty (Richard Griffiths) on their tail. Literally.
The resulting collection of off-guard moments is a fitting testament to the making of a classic.
