Trendwatch | Apocalyptic Comedies

End times meet fun times: the rise of the apocalyptic comedy.

It’s the end of the world as we know it, and Steve Carell doesn’t feel fine. His new movie, the amusing (and, we admit it — but didn’t sob, honest — moving) Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, has him and Keira Knightley facing the sharp end of a meteorite-plummeting-towards-Earth scenario with no Bruce Willis to save them.

And there’s further jocular doom-mongering in the pipeline — The End of the World, with Seth Rogen, James Franco and Rihanna partying their way towards The Rapture, and Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s apocalyptic pub crawl The World’s End, due next year and 2014 respectively, should the end of the Mayan calendar not have rendered the human race extinct by then.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World is out on 13 July
