With details previously sparse on the ground, this trailer finally sheds some light on the sequel's storyline, which is apparently only loosely based on Trainspotting writer Irvine Welsh's sequel Porno.

The follow-up to the cult classic sees director Danny Boyle reunite the original cast members Ewan McGregor (Mark 'Rent Boy' Renton), Ewen Bremner (Daniel 'Spud' Murphy), Jonny Lee Miller (Simon 'Sick Boy' Williamson) and Robert Carlyle (Francis 'Franco' Begbie).

During filming, McGregor and Bremner were photographed legging it through the streets of Edinburgh, just as they famously did in the opening to the 1996 movie.

Carlyle has been busy hyping up the script, saying it's one of the "best scripts I've f**king read".

"Without giving anything away, maybe some of [these characters] haven't really moved on [over the years]. That's what the audience is going to have to go through with them," he teased.

"I tell you, this film is going to be quite emotional for people. Because the film sort of tells you to think about yourself. You are going to be thinking, 'F**k, what have I done with my life?'"

Talking to Digital Spy, Kevin McKidd spoke about his sadness at not making a comeback with the gang - you know, because Tommy's dead - but added that he will make an appearance of some kind in the sequel.

"The character's dead so nothing I can do about it. But I did speak to Danny Boyle the other day, and he was asking if he could use some of the footage," he explained. "Because I think they're going to lament Tommy in the new film."

T2 Trainspotting arrives in UK cinemas on January 27, 2017 and February 10, 2017 in the US.
