Carrie Fisher's new book, The Princess Diarist, is a whopper, mainly because she details her affair with Harrison Ford while filming the first Star Wars, and also because her 19-year-old self described that affair in exquisitely painful detail. The book isn't too sexual, Fisher assured Stephen Colbert last night, but "the ion cannon will fire several blasts." Nice.
But that affair, by now, is old news. Colbert wanted to talk about Star Wars itself, and what Fisher thinks of her star-making role 40 years later. Specifically, how she was required to lose weight to fit in Princess Leia's insanely iconic slave bikini, and why Leia never got her own light saber—she could have used one. Depressingly, it comes down to sexism in entertainment. "Even in space, there's a double standard," Fisher told Colbert. And in space, even Princess Leia had to put up with an inconvenient white dress, a stolen blaster, and sexism when there was important shit to do.
