The Golden Globes are generally considered to be the fun alternative to the Oscars. There's plenty of booze, the TV folks get to hang out with the movie stars, and there's usually a few wild cards picking up nominations (and sometimes actual awards). (That's a nice way of referring to the pretty terrible Angelina Jolie-Johnny Depp romantic-comedy-thriller The Tourist picking up a Best Picture nod in 2011.)
But the Golden Globes also herald the official start to Awards Season, and they will usually give some clues as to who will get nominations for the top film awards. (That they come a few months after the Emmys just goes to show that it's more of a fun party for those who work in television.) This year's Globes honored the predictable frontrunners in the drama category (Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea, and Hell or High Water have good chances to pick up Oscar nominations), whereas the Musical or Comedy section is a little more padded with filler (but good luck, Deadpool).
The notable snub? Martin Scorsese's long-awaited Silence, which still has a chance to pull through in the Oscar race.
One major bummer: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will not return this year as hosts, this time passing the duties on to fellow SNL alum and Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon, who will probably giggle a lot and perform a hilarious medley of songs inspired by the nominated films à la Billy Crystal, only likely as Neil Young (I mean, why not?). The Golden Globes ceremony will take place January 8, 2017.
