It used to be the Inception horns. Those low, ominous, jarring blasts defined the turning point of a movie trailer in post-Inception Hollywood. They were everywhere. You didn't want to see a movie if the Inception horns were missing. Producers didn't want to make a movie without the horns. Composers even fought over who invented the horns, "It's a very, very, very touchy subject," one music supervisor told The Hollywood Reporter in 2015.

But, this is 2017, and there's a new sound in town. It's the pitched-down bass drop. And it's all the rage. It's the deep breath before the plunge into CGI and big-ass explosions. It's the cinematic equivalent of a "Warning Epic Action Ahead" sign. It's gonna sell so many tickets.
