You can count the number of times Jack Nicholson has been on the big screen during the past decade on one hand. As recently as 2006, the three-time Oscar winner wowed critics with his role as the infamous Frank Costello in The Departed; his last major appearance was in the James L. Brooks dramedy How Do You Know (2010) before taking what many in Hollywood considered a potentially indefinite hiatus—but it looks like he's back, sans The Shining axe.

According to Variety, sources say that Paramount Pictures has acquired the remake rights to German Oscar-nominated film Toni Erdmann. Nicholson will star as the title character opposite Kristen Wiig in the English-language version.

Variety notes that Nicholson was "courted" for several films over the past few years, but passed. However, Nicholson was a "huge fan" of the original Toni Erdmann and approached Paramount with the idea.
