It's certainly too early to speculate, but since you people are going to do it anyway for the next 302 days, let's go ahead and dig into these preliminary Star Wars VIII plot rumors. A new report from Making Star Wars reveals that Finn will go undercover in a First Order ship disguised as an officer. While there, the site reports, Finn will supposedly run into fellow former stormtrooper played by Tom Hardy, who recognizes Finn and slaps his arse to congratulate him on a promotion.

We think the Tom Hardy sequence (a bit where Hardy plays a stormtrooper) might play out slightly different than we once thought. The gist is that a stormtrooper that used to know Finn slaps his ass; knowing him back when he was FN-2187, the trooper clearly doesn't know what actually happened on Starkiller Base. We were told Finn was undercover in the sequence and we figured the trooper thought Finn was undercover too, hence their unusual interaction. However, knowing he wears this uniform, we now think there's a solid chance the trooper is congratulating Finn on his promotion within the First Order itself, not congratulating him for becoming a Resistance infiltrator as we first interpreted the information.

Sure! Tom Hardy and a little intergalactic arse slapping. I'm sold! The rest of it, though... Let's hope it plays out a little differently. It's concerning that once again the good guys are going to go undercover to infiltrate the bad guys, a plot device that has been used in approximately 90 percent of the Star Wars movies, including the most recent Rogue One prequel film from two months ago.

From previous rumours, we know that some of Star Wars VIII will be dedicated to Luke Skywalker training Rey on an isolated planet—a plot you might remember from The Empire Strikes Back. Others have pointed out that the official Star Wars database has updated Rey and Kylo Ren's character descriptions as the two having a "mysterious connection" and a "strange connection." Many have speculated that this means the two are related in some way, which would mean Star Wars is reusing a twist from literally every other fucking movie. But, whatever, there will still be space battles and, hopefully, Tom Hardy arse-slapping.
