Nobody is saying Oscar bait movies are bad—it's just that their intentions are so obvious. Why else is Casey Affleck playing a depressed single guy with a tragic past taking care of a kid whose dad dies young? What other purpose is there for Mel Gibson to make a film about the true story of a pacifist, Christian war hero? Why does Viola Davis cry so much? They want Oscars. They want Oscars so bad.

Unfortunately, all of these people pale in comparison to what comedian Seth Meyers pulls off in Oscar Bait. It's a film about... Well, it's not really clear what it's about, exactly. But it does have really long uncut shots of Meyers freaking out in a car. There's a child actor with three names. Some racial tension and homosexual undertones. All that plus a strange disease that its protagonist though which its must persevere! And so, so much crying. Obviously, it's shamelessly timed for award season.
