Speculation went into overdrive in January when Star Wars: The Last Jedi was announced as the title of Rian Johnson's Episode 8 film.

Who did it refer to? Did it mean more than one Jedi? And what does it mean for the future of the Force? Should we really caring about this shit?

In any case, the director has granted one fan a small clue on what it's all about as a surprise birthday present.

At first this might seem like a bit of a joke, but it does clear a few things up.

It had been speculated that 'The Last Jedi' could be a bit of a trick, hinting at something terminal but really just referring to the most recent member of the order – Luke Skywalker, one of his students, or perhaps a more mysterious figure.

But it looks like there's no trick. This is 'the final Jedi', so Episode 8 could well herald the end of the order.

The film will begin where Star Wars: The Force Awakens left off by exploring Rey's first meeting with Luke. Perhaps their conversation will include how the Jedi order has failed and a new light side replacement is needed?

Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie and Andy Serkis will return for the follow-up to The Force Awakens alongside newcomers Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released on 15 December.
