In the early 2010s, the names Star-Lord, Rocket, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, and Groot weren't quite as recognizable as ones like Iron Man and Captain America. When Guardians of the Galaxy was announced shortly after the all-star success of The Avengers, there was some serious skepticism. Who is this band of outsiders, made up of a human, a raccoon, and a tree-person? Why are they in space? What's with the '80s music?

But when Guardians of the Galaxy was released in 2014, the film immediately became one of Marvel's most critically acclaimed debuts of all time. It holds a 91 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes—but before those critics takes rolled in, even the cast was skeptical. As Chris Pratt told Jimmy Kimmel on Monday:

Overwhelmingly from people in the press when we were promoting the first movie the question they always asked was, "So, no one knows who the Guardians of the Galaxy are, doesn't that make you nervous? You could be in Marvel's first flop, is that okay with you?" And I was like, "Oh god. Oh no. Now I'm pretty nervous."

But, the film became a financial success, too. At the time of its release, it was the third highest-grossing Marvel movie of all time behind The Avengers and Iron Man 3.

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 due out on May 5, the movie is one of the most anticipated of the year. And the cast still has some big surprises to reveal for the sequel. On Kimmel last night, Pratt confirmed that Sylvester Stallone will be in the movie as well.
