Following the triumphant return of cult series Twin Peaks earlier this month, David Lynch broke fans' hearts when he seemingly revealed that he would never return to cinema.

True to form, though, David has since backtracked on those remarks and made the whole thing a little less definitive and a little more cryptic.

While appearing at the Cannes Film Festival, Lynch told press that he had been "misrepresented" (via The Playlist).

Spurring hope for another big-screen experience, the filmmaker said: "My remarks have been misrepresented. I did not say I quit cinema. Simply that nobody knows what the future holds."

At the beginning of May, Lynch appeared to suggest that he would not be returning to cinema following his last outing with 2006's Inland Empire because 'things have changed'.

"So many films were not doing well at the box office even though they might have been great films, and the things that were doing well at the box office weren't the things that I would want to do," he explained.

When asked if it was true he had made his last ever movie, Lynch confirmed, "Yes it is" – although now it seems that no, it's not. (Hopefully.)
