Over 55 years and 24 films, it's small wonder that more than a few famous actors have made a surprise appearance in the James Bond series.

From celebrity cameos to first acting breaks, here are some big names you forgot appeared alongside 007 – if you even noticed them in the first place.

1. Rosamund Pike – Miranda Frost in Die Another Day

Pike is mainly thought of as the celebrated star of Gone Girl these days, but there's no way we're letting her forget her role as evil MI6 agent Miranda Frost in the worst James Bond film of all time. Our favourite part was when she showed up in her bra to kill Halle Berry.

2. Benicio Del Toro – Dario in Licence to Kill

Look how young and smouldery Del Toro is as the villain's evil henchman in Licence to Kill, where Timothy Dalton taught him a valuable lesson about playing near industrial shredders.

3. Oona Chaplin – Receptionist in Quantum of Solace

Charlie Chaplin's granddaughter and future Game of Thrones star Oona was relegated to a no-name role working in Bolivian hotel Perla de las Dunas, who is saved from sexual assault by Olga Kurylenko.

4. Dolph Lundgren – Venz in A View to a Kill

Before career-defining triumphs like Rocky IV and, er, He-Man, Lundgren make his movie debut in A View to a Kill as a KGB henchman. Sadly, he didn't get any lines and was upstaged (as we all are) by Grace Jones.

5. Minnie Driver – Irina in GoldenEye

Minnie's subtle acting talents were on full display as she sang 'Stand By Your Man' in a hammy Russian accent for her role as the mistress of Robbie Coltrane's Valentin. Top marks for wardrobe, though.

6. Charles Dance – Claus in For Your Eyes Only

Charles Dance kicked off his career in movies by following the fine tradition of playing an evil henchman gunning for 007. Claus's future was less sunny than Dance's, as it was cut off abruptly by a harpoon in the back.

7. Gerard Butler – Sailor in Tomorrow Never Dies

Butler only gets one line in his blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance aboard the doomed HMS Devonshire, but at least he got to use his Scottish accent for a change.

8. Richard Branson – Man being frisked in Casino Royale

OK, Sir Richard might not be an actor, but he bought his way into a background shot at an airport by providing a Virgin plane for use in Casino Royale. Fun fact: his cameo was cut in the British Airways in-flight version of the movie.

9. Sammy Davis Jr – Casino punter in Diamonds are Forever

This is a bit of a cheat, as you wouldn't have noticed Sammy Davis in Diamonds are Forever because his scene was cut. We're not sure we would have dared to leave a Rat Pack member on the cutting room floor...
