Star Wars' Han Solo spin-off movie might have already started production, but it needs to find a new director pronto.

Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have surprisingly left the project, although Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy insists it's still on course for a May 2018 release.

Kennedy said in a statement: "Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented film-makers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it's become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we've decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon."

Lord and Miller, whose previous films include The LEGO Movie and the 21 Jump Street comedies, released their own statement echoing Lucasfilm's line about creative differences.

"Unfortunately, our vision and process weren't aligned with our partners on this project," they said. "We normally aren't fans of the phrase 'creative differences' but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew."

The news of Lord and Miller's exit has come completely out of the blue, as there's been no speculation about them being unhappy with the project.

The Han Solo spin-off stars Alden Ehrenreich as a 20-something version of Harrison Ford's iconic role, alongside Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian – originated in The Empire Strikes Back by Billy Dee Williams – and Joonas Suotamo taking over Chewbacca from Peter Mayhew.

Thandie Newton, Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson are also on the cast list.

Of course, this isn't the first Star Wars standalone to have director troubles. Fantastic Four's Josh Trank quit one of the spin-offs back in May 2015, however that was long before production started.

Rogue One also hired film-maker Tony Gilroy to help with reshoots for the film, although original director Gareth Edwards kept on the movie.

Something clearly went wrong here, and Lucasfilm doesn't have too long to fix it.
