As well as stepping into Ben Affleck's shoes as director on The Batman, it now seems Matt Reeves is coming in with an entirely fresh perspective too.

The War for the Planet of the Apes director has revealed that he has scrapped Affleck's original script for the DC film – which the star worked on with Chris Terrio and Geoff Johns.

Appearing on MTV's Happy Sad Confused podcast, Reeves was asked whether he was working with the original screenplay.

"No, it's a new story," he answered. "It's just starting again. I'm excited about it. I think it's going to be really cool."

Reeves took up The Batman directing mantle back in February after star Affleck stood down from helming the project – though he will still star as Bruce Wayne.

However, Reeves recently told Digital Spy what we can expect from his new DC movie, and according to him it is going to be pretty emotional and grown-up.

"I think [Christopher] Nolan's films did [maturity] and I think Batman as a myth is a very similar myth [to], in that he's a tortured soul who is struggling to find a way to do the right thing in a very imperfect world," Reeves said.

"As Caesar is part of the Apes franchise, the Apes franchise was a huge part of my childhood, and Batman was a huge part of my childhood too, yet weirdly both of them have the potential of speaking not down to an audience but being ambitious.

"I think the thing that I'm excited about is the idea of trying to tell a very point-of-view-driven, emotional story from that perspective in the same way that I tried to do with Caesar. I think there's a way to tell his story that could be very emotional."

We will next see Affleck's Batman in Justice League, which is due for release in November, though a release date for The Batman is yet to be confirmed.
