If the double whammy of Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk and the Brain Cox-starring Churchill aren't enough World War II for you, then Universal Pictures has just dropped the first trailer for Darkest Hour.

This film focuses on old Winston in the early days of the Second World War, and stars – believe it or not – The Dark Knight actor Gary Oldman beneath all those prosthetics.

In the trailer, we see the reluctant new Prime Minister have to deal with being appointed to a job he's not entirely ready for, disrespectful and stuffy people interrupting him, and, oh yeah, the small matter of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis invading all of Europe and threatening to bring the world to its knees.

With all the sweeping music and dramatic speeches, not to mention that this is a historical drama, you just know this film is destined for awards success. From this trailer alone, Oldman could well sweep up.

But he's not the only 'cream of the crop' British actor in the film. We've also got Rogue One's Ben Mendelsohn, Baby Driver's Lily James, Game of Thrones' Stephen Dillane and Nowhere Boy's Kristin Scott Thomas.

Legendary actor Sir John Hurt was also meant to star as Neville Chamberlain before he sadly passed away. Ronald Pickup has since taken over the role.

Darkest Hour is set to be released on 12 January in the United Kingdom.
