Actor John Heard was found dead in his Palo Alto, Calif., hotel room by housekeeping on Friday afternoon, TMZ reported. The actor, best known as Peter McCallister aka the dad from Home Alone, was 72 years old.

Although the cause of death is unknown, police do not believe it was foul play. According to TMZ, Heard had undergone "minor back surgery" earlier this week at Stanford Medical Center and was recovering at the hotel.

Heard's career began on the stage, ABC reported, when he starred in the 1974 off-Broadway production of "The Wager." He went on to act in Broadway productions, including "Othello," for which he won an Obie Award in 1979.

Heard played numerous roles on film and TV throughout his prolific career, including Home Alone and its sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. He was also in classics like The Pelican Brief, Awakenings, Big, and Beaches, according to IMDB. He was nominated for an Emmy for his 1999 portrayal of Detective Vin Makazian on The Sopranos and even played a role in the 2013 TV movie Sharknado.
