Adam Sandler has made a lot of bad movies. This is an objective fact. But you have to give the guy some credit: He's committed to making you laugh, even if the jokes are crude, easy, and sometimes downright offensive. And while his material is often subject to personal taste, you can make the case that he's a pretty good actor—even when he's, say, voicing shampoo bottles or making fart jokes.

Just look at his attempts to prove his acting chops. Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love is the most obvious evidence that Sandler can do a serious (if somewhat quirky) role, and then there were his roles in Reign Over Me and Funny People that displayed his dramatic talents. Is it possible for Adam Sandler to get the mainstream recognition for his acting after all these years of speaking in funny voices?

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) is going to be his next shot at serious acting. Written and directed by the Oscar-nominated Noah Baumbach—and co-starring Oscar winners Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson—the film depicts three adult siblings dealing with their overbearing father. The film received a four-minute standing ovation when it premiered at Cannes Film Festival in May, and it already stirred up some Oscar buzz for Sandler. His fellow SNL alum Ben Stiller, who previously appeared in Baumbach's Greenberg and While We're Young, also earned high praise for his performance.

Look, we live in a crazy time. "Oscar winner Adam Sandler" might not be too far-fetched come next Spring.

The Meyerowitz Stories premieres on Netflix 13 October.
