As the Han Solo movie nears the end of its troubled production, another Star Wars icon is getting his own spinoff movie. A standalone film focusing on Obi-Wan Kenobi is officially in the works, per The Hollywood Reporter, with Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry in talks to helm. Talks are still in the early stages, and there's currently no script.

Obi-Wan, who's been played by both Ewan McGregor and the late Alec Guinness, is one of the few characters who plays a pivotal on-screen role in both the original trilogy and the prequels. It's not yet clear whether McGregor–who played Obi-Wan in all three Star Wars prequels–will reprise the role, but he's definitely not opposed to the idea. "I've always thought there was a story to tell between my last one and Alec Guinness' first one," he said last year. "It would be fun to film that story now that I'm older."

So if McGregor gets his wish, this standalone movie will fill in the gaps in Obi-Wan's story between the end of Revenge of the Sith and the beginning of A New Hope. That time period after the prequels seems like pretty fertile ground for a solo story, as Obi-Wan tries to recover both from losing his padawan to the dark side and from all that terrible dialogue.
