We knew Stephen King was a fan of the new IT movie, but we didn't know it actually scared him too.

Speaking to Collider, producer Barbara Muschietti has revealed that there was one scene that terrified the author, so much so that he spoke about it to the director Andy Muschietti.

"Stephen King, the first email he sent to Andy when he had seen the movie, the one fear he wrote back, he said, 'I f**king love the woman in the painting, it scared the shit out of me'," she explained.

The scene in question sees Stan Uris stalked by a seriously creepy-looking woman playing a flute in a painting who comes to life, although King could also be referring to when Stan is attacked by the woman in the sewer too.

It turns out that the woman was inspired by the director's childhood and a painting in their home, which was also partly responsible for the creature in Mama.

Earlier this month, King enthused about the new version of IT by saying he "was not prepared for how good it really was", despite not being involved in the making of the movie at all.

"It's something that's different, and at the same time, it's something that audiences are gonna relate to," he explained. "They're gonna like the characters. To me, it's all about character. If you like the characters... if you care... the scares generally work."

It's safe to say that people did like IT as the horror has become a box office hit, with a sequel all-but confirmed.

IT is in cinemas now.
