Fans of Blade Runner have spent the last 35 years debating whether Harrison Ford's character Deckard was an android replicant or not.

The question was never definitively answered in the original movie, and those involved in the making of it have generally been vague about it – but then Ford recently said the whole thing was "resolved", although he wouldn't spill the details.

"I cannot tell you! Because then that question will go away and people will not have that pleasure of debating it," he said.

However, Ford's now suggested that it's not really resolved at all, and that he and director Ridley Scott had different opinions on the character.

"I think it's quite well known that my attitude about the character when I was working with Ridley was that the audience would require or would feel more comfortable if there's an assurance that at least one person on the screen was of their animal nature," he said (via The Huffington Post)

"They might be encouraged to have an emotional representative on screen, but I think my question and my confidence in my answer was more important than getting Ridley's support or acquiescence."

Ford added that the question adds a bit of fun to it all.

"It's really a question that is part of the fabric of this thing, and it's proved to be of interest to many people or of amusement to many people, so just leave it lay like that."

Blade Runner 2049's first reactions have been stellar, with words such as "magnificent", "phenomenal" and "mind-blowing" being bandied about, while Ford called it "the best script I've ever read".

Blade Runner 2049 opens on 5 October in the UK and 6 October in the US. Watch a trailer below:
