Blade Runner 2049 hits cinemas on 5 October – it's brilliant and complicated and sprawling and reviews have been glowing.

It's understandable that you might want to refresh your memory about what happens in the original. But which to choose from? After all, including work prints, there are eight different versions of the movie in total.

Fortunately, talking to The Wrap, director Denis Villeneuve has revealed which version(s) were his main touch points for the new movie.

"I think that you might not agree, but the idea was to make sure that someone who knows nothing about the universe can still enjoy the movie, having enough clues and background in the movie," he said. "So now, me, I feel that personally I love the very original version."

When they asked if he meant the original 1982 theatrical cut or one of the two test versions shown before the film's official release, Villeneuve added: "The very first one and the last one, the 2007 very final cut, you know? I have a tendency to go toward the very final cut."

Which we take to mean the 1982 theatrical.

In this version, the film has a vaguely happy ending with Harrison Ford's Deckard and Sean Young's Rachel leaving together. The 2007 version, which Ridley Scott had complete control over, eschews this ending.
