While the trend in superhero movies used to be "go darker and grittier," that style is on its way out thanks to a series of annoying DC films. Now, the X-Men properties are taking that in an interesting new direction: scarier.

Earlier this year, Legion, the new stand-alone FX show about the X-Men character, debuted to positive reviews. In the series, the mutant powers become more of a psychological horror, as a confused human comes to term with his otherworldly abilities.

In the first trailer for The New Mutants, the X-Men universe turns to horror again, as a series of kids are placed in an asylum where they're tormented by their own powers. And it's scary shit, as one would imagine when you find out you can teleport or transform into a werewolf. Based on the series of Marvel comics, The New Mutants stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Mahik, Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Stranger Things' Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, and Henry Zaga as Sunspot.

This marks yet another departure for the X-Men, which has become the most creative superhero franchise, with unique twists on the formula like the fourth-wall breaking raunchy comedy Deadpool and the brutal near-future dystopian Logan.
