Amazon has dropped a planned TV series starring Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore following the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

Amazon Studios acquired rights to the first television series from Silver Linings Playbook director David O'Russell in August last year, and it was due to be produced by The Weinstein Company.

The project was pitched as a crime thriller, possibly set in the 1990s, and went on to attract A-list stars in the form of Moore and De Niro.

The series has been in development for some time now (with earlier reports indicating the project would span multiple seasons), but over the weekend, Amazon announced it was dropping the project due to the multiple allegations of sexual harassment made against Hollywood mogul Weinstein.

Now, Moore, De Niro and O'Russell have agreed to pull the plug on the series altogether, saying in a joint statement: "We support Amazon's decision.

"In light of recent news and out of respect for all those affected we have decided together that it is best to not move forward with this show."

Weinstein has been accused of sexual misconduct by Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Rose McGowan, Cara Delevingne and Ashley Judd, although he has "unequivocally denied" any allegations of non-consensual sex.

After the initial accusations were made, the film producer was fired from the company and investigated by police in the UK and US.
