From the beginning, with her breakout role as the brilliant Naomi Lapaglia in The Wolf of Wall Street, Margot Robbie has often been on the verge of award-show success. Even in the critically maligned Suicide Squad, Robbie's performance as Harley Quinn was the film's only redeeming quality—outshining Academy Award-winning Method Actor Jared Leto as her love interest, The Joker.

If early film festival reviews aren't enough, this first trailer for I, Tonya is even more proof to already start considering Robbie for her Oscar nomination. In this dark, comedic approach to Tonya Harding, Robbie takes on the skates and attitude of the infamous American sports star. The Australian actress perfectly adopts the rural American accent and the early '90s look that became so iconic in the news after the attack on Nancy Kerrigan leading up to the 1994 Winter Olympics.

And it's clear in this trailer that this isn't simply a sports biopic, with fourth-wall breaking as the characters tell their own sides of the story—serving as unreliable narrators telling one of the biggest controversies in ice skating history. Alongside Robbie, the film stars the wonderful Allison Janney as her mother LaVona Golden and Sebastian Stan as her volatile ex-husband. This film has the ensemble and tone of a savagely funny and tragic critique of a public scandal that makes it look more like the acerbic Wolf of Wall Street.
