Quentin Tarantino loves to make a controversial movie, but perhaps some subjects are too much even for the famed director. Case in point: that rumoured Manson Family film.

Earlier this year there were whispers that Tarantino was working on a project about notorious murderer Charles Manson and his family, but those whispers have now been silenced altogether.

Although Tarantino hasn't denied the film's existence, he has now clarified that the subject is not Charles Manson but "1969" in general.

According to IndieWire, members of the Manson Family will still be portrayed in the film, and big names like Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt and Samuel L Jackson are rumoured to be attached.

Hinting that the movie is going ahead in some form or another, Tarantino also said that he was looking for a new distributor following the sexual misconduct claims against Harvey Weinstein.

"It's a level playing field," he commented.

After several allegations of historic sexual misconduct against Tarantino's long-time collaborator Weinstein were made public earlier this year, the filmmaker conceded he "knew enough to do more than [he] did".

"There was more to it than just the normal rumours, the normal gossip. It wasn't secondhand. I knew he did a couple of these things. I wish I had taken responsibility for what I heard."
