David Fincher has opened up about directing the forthcoming World War Z sequel.
The Mindhunter executive producer announced he was taking over sequel duties from Marc Forster in August this year, following the critical and commercial success of the original 2013 movie.
Not a lot else has emerged about the sequel, besides knowing Brad Pitt will be reprising his role as retired UN worker Gerry Lane.
However, in an interview this week, Fincher had a little more to say about the project.
"We're trying [to make it happen]," Fincher told Little White Lies. "A lot of stones have been laid.
"We're just deconstructing it right now against the mythology that exists to see where we can go."
OK. So there isn't that much to go on, but at least it sounds like World War Z 2 may escape the stuck-in-development hell that plagued its predecessor.
Max Brooks' complex novel was actually optioned in 2007 and went through multiple script changes before its eventual release in 2013, as the team tried to create a main character.
And we think they found a pretty good one in Gerry Lane... although more development could have gone into his two-dimensional wife, because Mireille Enos deserved so much better.
World War Z 2 is Fincher's first film-directing gig since Gone Girl in 2014, and his first sequel since the largely panned Alien 3.
Last month, he had this to say about World War Z 2:
"We're hoping to get a piece of material that's a reason to make a movie, not an excuse to make a movie," he told Empire.
Given that "a lot of stones have been laid" now, can we take this as a sign they've found that piece of material?
