Suicide Squad director David Ayer now wishes he had made the Joker the movie's main villain.

The film was critically trashed, but that didn't stop moviegoers from flocking to see it.

Indeed, Suicide Squad pulled an impressive $475 million, spawned a sequel and actually won an Oscar in January, despite general consensus that the movie sucked.

Let downs included Cara Delevingne's weird Enchantress villain and most importantly Jared Leto's not entirely purposeful portrayal of the Joker.

For one, the actor was hardly in the movie despite promotional media suggesting he would be a main player; and even when he was, Leto's performance failed to impress critics.

But may it all have turned out differently if Ayer went with his gut and made The Joker the movie's main villain?

Well, it seems so, as Ayer has now revealed his sincere regret that The Joker was a Suicide Squad bit player.

Replying to a fan on Twitter on Sunday (November 26), Ayer hinted that he had originally considered casting Jared Leto as the movie's big bad and wishes he had done.

"Believe me," he said. "I agonise over this. Yes. Joker should have been main bad guy."

This isn't the first time Ayer has mourned what could have been, as earlier this year he also tweeted a wish for a time machine to go back and do things differently.

But no matter. It's onto the sequel now, which was confirmed for development back in August.
