Look, if you've seen even a few seconds of a trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, you know the movie is going to be one hell of a bummer. Emo Luke Skywalker is not really stoked on the Jedi and has become somewhat of an asshole in his self-inflicted banishment. And to get in that really depressing headspace, Mark Hamill actually constructed his own heartbreaking backstory for Luke between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

As we already know, before The Force Awakens, Luke had attempted to set up a new Jedi academy, which didn't end well! His pupil Kylo Ren, turned to the dark side and it all went to shit. But in Hamill's version of things, Skywalker's past was even more tragic:

I wrote lots and lots of scenarios. I made notes that he fell in love with a woman who was a widow and had this young child. He left the Jedi to raise this young child and marry this woman, and the child got hold of a lightsaber and accidentally killed himself." It's nothing to do with the story, but when I think about gun violence and you read these tragic stories of kids getting hold of their parents' guns and killing a sibling or themselves, I mean, I had to go to really dark places to get where Luke needed to be for this story.

Well. Shit. That's pretty rough. So much for that happy ending at the end of Return of the Jedi. At least Rian Johnson and J.J. Abrams have a chance to make things slightly less depressing at the end of the Skywalker saga.
