The Instagram post also shows Lady Bird star Saoirse Ronan as her cousin, the titular Mary, Queen of Scots. The film will focus on the rivalry between the two monarchs, after Mary Stuart returns to Scotland a widowed former queen of France.

As a Catholic ruler, Mary's arrival back in Britain threatens the Protestant Queen's throne and ushers in a tense political period where both queens are surrounded by scheming counsellors.

"Everyone manipulated their relationship," Robbie told EW. "It's complicated, it's tragic, and it's bizarre. The only other person in the world who could understand the position they were in was each other."

Mary, Queen of Scots - which will also star Joe Alwyn, David Tennant and Guy Pearce will be released in November 2018.
