Looking for a Christmas box-set to get stuck into? Missing Entourage and looking for something - anything - to fill the void? Look no further than under-the-radar HBO drama How to Make it in America. The story is basic enough: two guys trying to create a t-shirt line. And, being based in New York, everyone hustles instead of works and there's a character played by a rapper (Kid Cudi in this instance).
There's also some proper actors involved, such as the likes of Luis Guzman, Gina Gerschon and James Ransome, just to offset the slight dullness of the main characters. And we've noticed a ramping up in casual nudity in the second series, surely to distract us from the more unbelievable aspects of the show. It's working.
It does lack the male sex in the city feel that Entourage had. And, most importantly, the products the duo are spending so much time on are just a bit, well, rubbish. They'd never make it into our style section, that's for sure.
But despite all this, it's still enjoyable enough to take up half an hour of your time. If you're missing Entourage and fancy something a little lighter than Boardwalk Empire, this is a perfect substitute. If we had to sum up the show, we'd say it was the equivalent of an enjoyable, if forgettable, three minute song. With added nudity.
