Channing Tatum Is Starring As The Mermaid In The Splash Reboot

It's getting the Ghostbusters treatment

Here are two indisputable facts:

  • Despite widespread predictions that it would bomb, the all-female Ghostbusters movie is a critically-acclaimed box office hit.
  • There is nothing funnier on this Earth than pissing off men's rights activists.

Here's another (related) fact that we're just as happy about: the upcoming remake of 1984 Disney classic Splash is set to undergo the Ghostbusters gender-swap treatment, too.

But before we dive in, some background: the original Splash follows the story of a guy who reunites with a woman who saved him from drowning as a youngster – but get this: he doesn't know she's a mermaid! They end up falling in love, yada yada yada, he finds out that she's half-fish, the US army get involved – look, we'll stop there. We don't want to ruin it for you.

This time around the mermaid will be played by Channing Tatum, opposite Daryl Hannah as the tail-chasing protagonist.

Marja-Lewis Ryan is writing the script, and Ron Howard is helping Channing Tatum in his production duties.

Needless to say, we fully support the move - and what's more, we think it should happen to loads of long-dormant classics. The Blue's Brothers would become The Blue's Sisters. Goodfellas could return as Goodgals, and Reservoir Dogs could... actually, best to leave that one.
