Was Sonic the Hedgehog ever actually cool? As brilliant and impactful as his original Mega Drive outings surely were, Sega's spiky mascot always had a palpable air of focus-grouped, "how do you do, fellow kids?" corniness about him.

But one thing's for sure: we'd rather have the 90s' slightly pathetic, guitar solo-ripping version than… than… this:

Is that a f*cking snood, 2016 Sonic? Are you serious?

Someone needs to bring him back from the brink – and it looks set to be (former) Deadpool director Tim Miller who, according to the Hollywood Reporter, wants to develop a "hybrid" live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

To be fair, he does seem like the best man for the job. He's already shown that he can make a movie about a perma-wise-cracking hero and somehow not make it the most annoying thing in the world.

Patrick Casey and Josh Miller, who created Golan the Insatiable (us neither, but sounds good, doesn't it?), are writing the script, and Miller is also working with Fast and Furious producer Neal H. Moritz.

Video game movie adaptions are almost always the very worst thing that's ever happened to human kind, but Miller can find solace in the face that whatever he manages to produce will almost definitely be better than 1993's Super Mario Bros. movie.

And, finally, after all these years, Sega will have won the console war once and for all.
