Twenty years after Mark "Rent Boy" Renton fled London with £16,000 in stolen cash, Ewan McGregor has revealed what his Trainspotting character has been up to in the time between the original film and next year's sequel: running.
In an official featurette for T2 Trainspotting, McGregor says Renton "went to Holland with the cash, and has lived there since" while replacing his drug addiction with a running habit.
"He's so broken when he comes back, he's really in a state." McGregor say. "That's why he's back, because these are the only people that really know him or that he knows."
In an interview with Esquire earlier this year, author Irvine Welsh discussed the cultural impact of the book and its film adaptation, saying: [Trainspotting] "has been around for so long now that it belongs to the world. It's become this big, cultural marking point, really, this artefact, and it cuts right across countries.
"I'm very, very lucky that I was able to do that with my first novel because everybody wants to have a book like that."
Trainspotting 2 is set to be released in February, with the original 1996 cast, as well as director Danny Boyle, all on board for the project.
