Heath Ledger's Sister Says His Death Wasn't Linked To Playing The Joker

Heath Ledgers chilling performance as the psychotic killer in clown make-up in The Dark Knight has become entwined with his tragic suicide, with many suggesting that it could have had an adverse effect on his mental health .

But speaking in forthcoming documentary, I Am Heath Ledger, his sister Kate has said that his death in 2008 had nothing to do with his role as The Joker in Christopher Nolan's Batman classic.

At the time reports claimed that Ledger had become engrossed in the role and his commitment to method acting the part meticulously lead to a downward spiral on his mindset.

The New York Times reported that he found the role "physically and mentally draining" and his father Kim previously commented that "He galvanized the upcoming character. He liked to dive into his characters, but this time he really took it up a notch."

It was widely reported that the Australian actor suffered from a severe bout of insomnia as a result of the role and this lead to a him overdosing on prescription medication.

However speaking ahead of the documentary's release his sister commented: "I was really shocked, because that was him having fun."

"Every report was coming out that he was depressed and that the role was taking this toll on him, and we're going, honestly, it was the absolute opposite. It couldn't be more wrong" she added.

"He had an amazing sense of humour, and I guess maybe only his family and friends knew that, but he was having fun. He wasn't depressed about The Joker!"

The film's producer Matt Amato, commented similarly: "I hope it's an antidote to a lot of the gossip that exists in the world. There are some really terrible things about Heath out there."
