Sylvester Stallone has been teasing fans with details about the sequel to the surprisingly excellent Creed, his Michael B. Jordan-led extension of the Rocky franchise that followed the son of the Italian Stallion's great rival Apollo.
The good news for those of us who grew up watching Rock slug it out in the increasingly preposterous sequels is that Stallone appears to be taking inspiration from Rocky IV, which you will remember is the one in which Balboa single-handedly ends the Cold War by beating a steroid-enhanced Russian called Ivan Drago. Drago, of course, killed Apollo Creed after he danced into the ring wearing an Uncle Sam costume – a moment of cinematic tragedy buried in your heart somewhere alongside Bambi's mother being shot.
Anyway – on Instragram, Stallone posted a couple of rather subtle hints that Creed 2 could see the younger in some way seek to avenge his father's death with another Russia-inspired showdown.
No specifics as yet – surely having Apollo fight Drago (who must be getting on a bit by now) or worst still, his own offspring would be too silly even for Sly – but it's not too much of a stretch to suppose the Russian went on to discover his own boxing protégé.
In any case, director Ryan Coogler will (hopefully) be on board to curb any of Stallone's more ridiculous instincts, even if the little boy in most of us will secretly hope he doesn't.
