Mike Leigh, the English writer and director who has been nominated for seven Oscars during his career is looking for "authentic northern faces" which look "miserable and down-trodden" for his new film about the Peterloo Massacre in which 15 people died and more than 600 were injured.

The man who wrote and was Oscar nominated for films like Happy-Go-Lucky and Vera Drake will focus on the infamous day in 1819 in Manchester when armed government troops attacked a crowd of peaceful protesters who were demanding parliamentary reform.

The ad posted by Piece of Cake Casting asks hopefuls to send a "gritty selfie" to the casting agency and is looking for people with "longer, collar-length hair" who "look really miserable, pretty down-trodden".
