Matthew McConaughey Left Stunned After Discovering Death Of Former Co-star Sam Shepard

"We lost one of the great ones"

Matthew McConaughey was left speechless at the premiere of his new film The Dark Tower when he was informed his Mud co-star Sam Shepard had passed away several days ago.

News became public of his passing only hours before McConaughey took to the red carpet meaning he learned of his death during an interview.

Clearly in disbelief the Dallas Buyers Club actor asked, "Sam Shepard moved on?" in response to The Associated Press reporter.

"Look, I'm not going to trivialise that situation, I just heard about it for the first time. But I always told (director) Jeff Nichols this, I said the whole trailer for Mud could be Sam Shepard sitting in that green chair telling the boy about who Mud is. It'd be about a two-and-a-half minute trailer, but it would have been really badass."

"He moved on today?" he continued. "Well, we lost one of the great ones. Great writer, great mind. See you in the next one, Sam."

A fitting and eloquent tribute.
