More details have been confirmed about First Man, the new film about Neil Armstrong from Damien Chazelle (La La Land, Whiplash).

Ryan Gosling is on board to play history's most famous astronaut in the story of NASA's mission to land a man on the moon and Armstrong's life between 1961 and 1969.

Based on James R. Hansen's novel of the same name, the film will, according to The Hollywood Reporter, "explore the sacrifices and the cost — on Armstrong and on the nation — of one of the most dangerous space missions in history."

Other cast members include Claire Foy (The Crown) who will play Armstrong's wife Janet Shearon, while Corey Stoll (House Of Cards) and Kyle Chandler (Manchester By The Sea) will play Buzz Aldrin and Deke Slayton.

Given the slew of Academy Award nods between the growing cast of this project, the term 'Oscar bait' more than springs to mind - even more so after yesterday's announcement that Jon Bernthal would join the cast following several hits this summer including Baby Driver, Shot Caller and Wind River. That's not to mention his previous projects - Sicario, The Accountant, The Wolf of Wall Street - which suggest we'll enjoy First Man very much indeed.

The Tracking Board reports that, "Bernthal is in negotiations to play Dave Scott, who walked on the moon in July 1971 as part of Apollo 15, making him one of only a dozen men to have set foot on its surface."

In charge of the script is (yep, Oscar-winning) Spotlight writer Josh Singer, and Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen will produce the film. The pair have worked on a number of YA successes from Maze Runner to Twilight.

Shooting is due to begin in November and First Man is set for release on Oct. 12, 2018.

Oh, just in time for Oscar season then?
