Denis Villeneuve's 007 future called into doubt

What a difference a week makes.

Seven days ago we brought you news that a frontrunner had emerged in the battle for the director's seat on Daniel Craig's final Bond film.

According to the rumour mill, Arrival director Denis Villeneuve was set to take the helm after meeting with producers. But news this week that he's set to take the helm on Disney's new live-action Cleopatra as well as a remake of Dune means he's unlikely to have time to fit both into his schedule.

Villeneuve's latest film, the Ryan Gosling-starring Blade Runner 2049 is already attracting rave reviews. But perhaps Villeneuve is ready to swap tough male action stars for tough female Pharaohs instead.

What this means for Bond 25 is unknown, but directors Yann Demange and David Mackenzie have also been mentioned.

Whatever happens, the newest addition to rumoured Bond extended universe plans will have large shoes to fill. Despite underperforming with critics, 2015's Spectre still managed to take home over $880m worldwide...
