U.S. sketch show Portlandia is a wry take on the place where hipster meets hippy and make cutesy tote bags together and it's finally coming to the UK this month on DVD.
The hit show imagines Oregon’s bohemian enclave as a place where George W. Bush never happened, everyone who is anyone went to clown school and plaid didn’t go out of fashion with Kurt Cobain.
The work of Saturday Night Live veteran Fred Armisen and former Sleater Kinney singer Carrie Brownstein, Portlandia is a series of character based sketches where being so right on has gone completely wrong.
It launched on Netflix last year with series one and two out on DVD this month. As a taster, here’s three of the most on point set-ups from the show.
1. Local Chicken
Corn-fed Portland couple won’t eat Colin the chicken unless they know exactly where he’s been bred, what he’s been fed and if he’s been a happy chappy before he got the chop. You’ll never eat organic again after this:
2. Feminist Bookstore
The ladies of Women and Women First want only ‘bottom selling authors’ in stock, sip capu-chuchu-chuchu tea out of jam jars and do everything in their power to make this book business fail. Makes Amazon look a godsend.
3. Put a bird on it
If you’ve ever been queasy about your girlfriend accessorising wellingtons, notepads and tote bags with unrealistically cute animals (c’mon, squirrels are a menace) this is for you. Cath Kidston fans look away now.
